Sustainable Packaging: Build Me Up Butter
Objective: Create new packaging for perishable food products that are more sustainable.
The goal of Build Me Up Butter was to create a packaging concept that created little to no waste by minimizing unrecyclable or nonbiodegradable materials and creating design elements that enticed the consumer to keep and reuse it. Build Me Up butter focuses on making the essential ingredient, butter, more accessible through intuitive and accessible packaging. One unit includes four sticks of butter that are packaged in individual boxes on trays. This reduces waste from unrecyclable wrappers or plastic tubs. The trays of each box also include tablespoon measurements to make dividing portions of butter easier. The lid of the larger box includes a recipe on the lid that can be torn off and saved, reducing thrown-away material. The overall design of the packaging was created to be beautiful. A buyer could look at the designs on the inside of the box and decide to keep it as a bookmark or materials for a scrapbook. This in turn reduces the materials being thrown away. The boxes are made from fully biodegradable material and the individual butter boxes are lined with nanocellulose to ensure freshness.
